ADHD and Autism Diagnosis for Adults in Switzerland

A formal assessment brings clarity – and unlocks therapy, medication and possible accommodations at work or behind the wheel. Here's how the process works in Switzerland.

The typical process

  1. GP consultation – referral to a specialist.
  2. Psychiatric or neuropsychological assessment – several sessions with anamnesis, questionnaires (ADOS-2, ADI-R, DIVA-5) and behavioural observation.
  3. Feedback session – written report with diagnosis and recommendations.

Realistically plan 3 to 9 months, depending on region and waiting lists.

Where to go by region

  • Zurich: PUK, specialist clinics for adult ADHD/autism.
  • Bern: UPD Bern, autism clinic.
  • Basel: UPK Basel.
  • French-speaking: CHUV Lausanne, HUG Geneva.
  • Ticino: OSC.

Independent psychiatrists and neuropsychologists also offer assessments.

Costs and insurance

Diagnostics are covered by basic insurance if medically prescribed. You pay deductible and co-payment. Non-medical neuropsychological testing often requires supplementary insurance or self-pay (CHF 1,500–3,500).

AuDHD – when both apply

Many adults receive one diagnosis first and the second years later. Mention it explicitly – see also AuDHD in adults.

Before the diagnosis: self-assessment

Our online checks are not a diagnosis but help prepare for the conversation:

After the diagnosis

  • Therapy (CBT, coaching, possibly medication)
  • Workplace accommodations (IV counselling, job coach)
  • Driving fitness: with AuDHD or on medication, a traffic-medicine assessment may be advisable.
